"DownBeat" - April 2009

COVER STORY:
Freddie Hubbard - DownBeat celebrates the life and music of the late trumpeter, one of the most influential on the horn over the past 50 years.

FEATURES
DownBeat U -- Trumpet School:
Roy Eldridge -- Part of DownBeat’s 75th Anniversary celebration, we dip into the archives to pull a classic 1959 interview with DownBeat Hall of Famer “Little Jazz,” one of the most swinging and influential trumpeters in the history of the music.
Jon Hassell -- The trumpeter has had an enormous influence on electronic and ambient jazz, especially in his work with Brian Eno. We caught up with him as he has his first new ECM album in about 20 years set for release.
David Weiss -- Weiss has been engaged in an extremely creative period, in which he’s being pulled in two directions. On one side, he looks toward the past, helping to resurrect the Charles Tolliver Big Band, working with Freddie Hubbard, and doing programs devoted to the likes of the Cookers, Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter. On the other hand, he’s a prolific composer, developing new music with the New Jazz Composers Octet, his Point of Departure Quintet and his sextet.
Arve Henriksen -- Perhaps the most influential young trumpeter in Europe today, Henriksen has been a pivotal force in the burgeoning Norwegian jazz scene, leading such bands as Supersilent or the electronics-meets-acoustic sound on his hew album, Cartography.
Sean Jones and Terrell Stafford Master Classes
