DownBeat November 2007 issue

COVER STORY

With respect to Max Roach, DownBeat has changed the November issue feature story on Max Roach to the cover story. Dave Brubeck will instead be the cover feature for the December issue
FEATURES
Wynton Marsalis — Live on stage at the North Sea Jazz Festival, young, rising star New Orleans-born trumpeter Christian Scott interviewed fellow New Orleans native Marsalis. The result is two trumpeters—with plenty of differences, and plenty of similarities—talking trumpet and swapping generational ideas.
DownBeat Lifetime Achievement Award–Dan Morgenstern — We present our annual award for a lifetime commitment to jazz to a former DownBeat editor, director of the Institute for Jazz Studies at Rutgers and a tireless advocate for the music.
SPECIAL SECTION: Drum Beat
Max Roach — From his still-living contemporaries to today’s young time keepers, drummers could talk for hours about Roach’s influence. From his seminal bebop explorations to his forays into the avant-garde, the drummer’s innovative playing has served as a beacon of jazz excellence for more than 60 years. We may not hear Roach on the bandstand anymore, but we can still appreciate his monumental talent.
Louis Hayes — To celebrate his 70th birthday, the former Cannonball Adderley and Horace Silver drummer led three different groups at New York’s Jazz Standard. The result was a snapshot of the amazing breadth of Hayes’ drum talent, as well as his prowess as a leader.
A New Beat — From Dafnis Prieto, Jeff Ballard and David King to Hamid Drake, Terreon Gully and many others, drummers are reinventing the rhythmic matrix upon which jazz “swings.”
