Louis Banks & Jazz in India

Pianist Louis Banks discovered his love for jazz when he listened to a record by Oscar Peterson, as Sonam Savlani reports ( Hindustan Times ). His most important international gig was playing five concerts with Dizzy Gillespie. There is hardly any mainstream jazz on the Indian scene; the most popular jazz genre in his country is the fusion of jazz and rock (and elements from Indian music). The festival Jazz Yatras has become more and more commercial in recent years; Indian classical music and jazz do not get their due in the country.
